St. Francis Xavier University (StFX) is a public undergraduate liberal arts education institution located in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada. The university was founded as Arichat College in 1853, which served as a Roman Catholic diocesan institution in Arcihat. The college then moved to its current location in 1855 and was established as St. Francis Xavier College. In 1866, the college was given university status, and thus, it became St. Francis Xavier University, awarding its first degrees in 1868.
St. Francis Xavier offers more than $2 million yearly in merit-based scholarships to its new and current undergraduate students. The university is organized into the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Arts, the Gerald Schwartz School of Business, the Brian Mulroney Institute of Government, Faculty of Education and the Coady International.
The University attracts students from over 46 countries to attend the diverse and multicultural campus at StFX. The Office of Internationalization at the University offers students support by organizing Student Orientation in September and January, aiding in the maintenance of Canadian government immigration documents, providing information to work on campus, social insurance numbers and information on income tax. The office also organizes cultural and social programs to help international students feel connected to the environment on campus.
Support is also provided to develop a positive mindset among students to improve their mental health. All international students also have access to world-class university academic and career development facilities.
Almost 50% of St. Francis Xavier University students live on-campus in the residences available for students. They can choose from the traditional residence halls to apart-style housing options. Usually, first and second-year students are given traditional residences, making their university life thrive in the social environment. These students are also given the mandatory meal plans at the central dining hall- Morrison Hall. Second and third-year students are then allowed to stay in apartment-style housing where they can have the liberty to cook their food. These apartments consist of four bedrooms with two full bathrooms and a kitchen.
The traditional residence halls at St. Francis Xavier University are- Bishops’ Hall, Cameron Hall, MacKinnon Hall, Lane Hall, Maclsaac Hall, O’Regan Hall, Mount Saint Bernard, and Riley Hall. The apartment-style housing is available at Somers and Power Halls and Governor Hall.
The main campus of StFX is located in the county of Antigonish, in the province of Nova Scotia. The modern and beautiful campus of the university is a spectacular home away from home for the students, as the university administration has spent over $250 million in the past 20 years to create an infrastructure that gives the best to students. The campus has many facilities available right where the students learn, including- live theatre, five dining venues, a convenience store, Starbucks and fair-trade cafes, a gym, a campus bookstore, ice rinks, and two libraries.
