Overview

The University of Manitoba is a public research university located in Winnipeg, the capital city of Manitoba. It became the first university in western Canada when it was founded in 1877 and, since then, has been driving discovery and inspiring minds through its innovative teaching and research excellence.

The U of M offers more than 100 degree programs, with most of its academic programs including graduate study options leading to master's and doctoral degrees. Serving more than 30,000 students across all its campuses, the university has thrived as a hub for students who take admission to get inspired. It offers an extensive study abroad program, wherein students can choose from 36 countries to participate in internships, service-learnings and exchange programs.

The international student population at the University of Manitoba stands at 21.9 percent, having representation from 115 countries.

Services for International Students

The International Centre at the University serves as a guiding platform, intending to make the students feel welcome in a new country. The centre offers a welcome program and orientation at the beginning of the term to help students transition and connect with others at the University. 

There is also a provision of the International Student Health Plan that lets you have access to comprehensive health coverage. The health and wellness services also include spiritual care and counselling resources for everyone to keep the mental health state at optimal.

Accommodation

With more than 1350 students living on-campus each year, the U of M offers an exciting space with unique programs and opportunities emphasizing academic and social growth along with chances to experience diversity, wellness, leadership and community building.

The main residences on campus include- Arthur V. Mauro Residence, Pembina Hall Residence Mary Speechly Hall, and University College Residence. Apart from these, there are other two housing facilities available in the two affiliated colleges of the University campus.

About Location

The main campus of the University of Manitoba is located in the Fort Garry neighbourhood of Winnipeg. There are other campuses as well, located throughout the city, namely- James W. Burns Executive Education Centre, Bannatyne Campus, and William Norrie Centre.

The city of Winnipeg is named after Lake Winnipeg and is known as the “Gateway to the west.” The nearest airport to Winnipeg is the Winnipeg (YWG) Airport, which is just 8 km away from the city. Students can easily travel to the University of Manitoba by bike, bus or car. The Winnipeg Transit operates 13 transit routes to the Fort Garry campus, 10 to the Bannatyne campus and 4 to the William Norrie campus, apart from several rapid transit and express route options.
