University of Saskatchewan Western College of Medicine increasing veterinary program intake

Published 05 October 2022

The University of Saskatchewan Western Veterinary College of Medicine has increased its veterinary medicine program intake from 20 to 25 students.

The University offers veterinary medicine programs through the Western Veterinary College of Medicine (WVCM) and according to the Agriculture Minister, David Marit, this move will help increase the number of vets in rural areas of Saskatchewan, which is currently suffering a shortage of qualified veterinarians.

To encourage students to take up veterinary medicine, the province has also announced a Loan Forgiveness Program for vets and veterinary technologists. The government has announced a graduation retention program that offers up to $20,000 in income tax credits for post-secondary students who continue to live and work in Saskatchewan.

WVCM Dean, Dr. Gillian Muir said: “This investment will not only work for the future of students who pursue veterinary medicine but will also be an important step in the protection of animals, which plays a crucial role in the agricultural industry of the region.”
